1. Supported web browsers

Other browsers built on Chromium (Opera, Brave, Vivaldi and others) behave exactly like Google Chrome — NET Genium does not distinguish between them, so whatever this guide says about Chrome applies to them as well.

Internet Explorer is not supported. Microsoft ended its support on 15 June 2022 and, since 14 February 2023, the desktop application has been permanently disabled on both Windows 10 and Windows 11.

2. Pop-up windows

  • NET Genium opens a pop-up window in one situation only — when it hands a finished file over to the browser. That happens when printing a report, when exporting data from a lookup table, and when opening or downloading a file attachment.
  • The file is created on the server, so the window opens only some time after the user clicks. The browser therefore treats it as unsolicited and blocks it — until you allow the address of your NET Genium once.
  • The other dialogs of the application do not use pop-up windows — a composite filter condition in a lookup table, assigning a value to all filtered records and customising a lookup table are all rendered directly in the page.
  • NET Genium also offers the finished file as a link in the page. Even with the pop-up window blocked you can therefore get to the file by clicking that link — allowing pop-up windows is more convenient, though, and has to be done only once.

2.1. Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge

  • Once a window has been blocked, a pop-up icon appears in the right-hand part of the address bar. Click on it, select “Always allow pop-ups and redirects from …” and click on the “Done” button.

  • The same can be set in advance, without a blocked window — in Google Chrome at chrome://settings/content/popups, in Microsoft Edge at edge://settings/content/popups. Add the address of your NET Genium to the list of sites allowed to show pop-ups.

2.2. Mozilla Firefox

  • Once a window has been blocked, an information bar with a settings button appears below the address bar. From its menu, allow pop-up windows for this site.
  • The same can be set in advance in “Settings > Privacy & Security > Permissions”, where you click on the “Exceptions…” button next to the “Block pop-up windows” option and allow the address of your NET Genium.

3. Displaying print reports in PDF format

  • In Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox on a Windows computer, a print report in PDF format opens directly in the browser, in its built-in PDF viewer.
  • In all other cases — that is, on macOS, on mobile devices and in other browsers — the report is offered for download and opens in the application the device has set for the PDF format.
  • Only the way the report is displayed differs; its content is the same in both cases.

4. Automatic login via Active Directory

  • Automatic login uses integrated Windows authentication: the browser sends the identity of the user logged in to Windows to the server, and NET Genium matches it against the value of the “Windows account” field in the users table.
  • If you do not need this feature, you can leave your browser settings by default — no changes are necessary.
  • Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge offer integrated authentication only to a server they consider internal, and they decide according to two sources. The “Authentication server allowlist” group policy takes precedence (see chapter 4.1); if it is not set, they fall back on the zone set in Windows (see chapter 4.2). It is therefore enough to choose one of the two ways.
  • Mozilla Firefox uses neither of these sources — integrated authentication is enabled in its own configuration (see chapter 4.3).

4.1. Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge — the Authentication server allowlist policy

  • We recommend this way: it states the address of your NET Genium explicitly, it is set centrally for all computers in the domain, and on newly installed Windows 11 computers it is usually the only way that works.
  • Set the policy in the “Group Policy Management” console, or in the “Local Group Policy Editor” (Windows + R, “gpedit.msc”) if a single computer is concerned.
  • For Google Chrome, the policy is in “Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Google > Google Chrome > HTTP authentication > Authentication server allowlist”.
  • For Microsoft Edge, the policy is in “Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge > HTTP authentication > Configure list of allowed authentication servers”.
  • Enable the policy and enter the address of your NET Genium in the list.
  • The policy templates (“Administrative Templates”) are not part of Windows — they have to be installed for the given browser first. For Google Chrome they are contained in the “Chrome Enterprise Bundle”, for Microsoft Edge in the “Microsoft Edge policy templates”; both are available free of charge from the browser vendor.
  • The changes made will take effect after restarting the web browser.

4.2. Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge — local intranet zone

  • This way applies only if the policy from the previous chapter is not set. The address of your NET Genium has to be added to the local intranet zone.
  • The zone settings are part of Windows and can be opened even on a computer without Internet Explorer. Press Windows + R, type “inetcpl.cpl” and confirm with enter — the “Internet Options” dialog box opens.

4.2.1. Add a NET Genium address to the Local intranet zone

  • In the “Internet Options” dialog box, go to the “Security” tab, select “Local intranet” and click on the “Sites” button.

  • In the dialog box that just opens, click on the “Advanced” button and add the address of your NET Genium to the intranet zone with the “Add” button.

4.2.2. Enable Integrated Windows Authentication

  • In the “Internet Options” dialog box, go to the “Advanced” tab and check the “Enable Integrated Windows Authentication” checkbox.

  • The changes made will take effect after restarting the web browser.

4.3. Mozilla Firefox

  • Type “about:config” in the address bar of your web browser and confirm with enter.

  • Confirm the entry of the settings with the “Accept the Risk and Continue” button.
  • Type “negotiate” into the search field and double-click on the option “network.negotiate-auth.delegation-uris”.

  • In the newly opened dialog box, enter the address of your NET Genium and confirm with the “Tick” button.
  • Then double-click to select “network.negotiate-auth.trusted-uris”.
  • In the newly opened dialog box, enter the address of your NET Genium and confirm with the “Tick” button.

  • Close the web browser. The changes made will take effect after it is restarted.
